How to Creatively Update your Bathroom on a Budget

If you are getting tired of your outdated bathroom and it’s time for an update, what are you waiting for? If its money you say, join the rest of home owners that struggle to make needed or wanted updates to their bathroom because of budget constraints. While being on a budget for you may mean only changing out the plumbing fixtures, while to someone else  it may mean only adding paint to the walls. Whichever is your scenario there are easy ways to update your bathroom, follow these tips.

• Modernize with color: Depending on how much you can afford, adding modern colors to your bathroom can be the difference between a bathroom you enjoy to wake up to, and one that you rush out of in the morning! For a natural and Zen inspired bathroom use colors inspired by nature: browns, greens, blues, and beiges will instantly update your surroundings. Whether it’s through paint color, wall paper, finishes, or bath linens, modernize instantly with a pleasing color palette.
• Do it yourself projects: If you are handy with do it yourself projects, a bathroom update may not be as expensive as you think. Consider installing beadboard paneling on your walls for a cottage interior feeling. Changing out plumbing fixtures to modern ones in your bathtub/shower and sink area is relatively simple, and can update the look of your entire sink or bathing area. If you have a favorite home improvement store, check to see if they have any do it yourself workshops. Many stores will feature a DIY project regularly, and many of them will arm you with the knowledge to update your bathroom.

• Restore the classics: Assess the reason why you are updating your bathroom. If you are updating your bathroom because of old looking and malfunctioning amenities, then replacing with new is your best option. While, if you have a classic claw foot tub that is starting to discolor from age, there are many restoration techniques you can do to restore it. Between the internet, blogs, and design television programs, you are bound to find resources to help you update your classic bathroom to a functional and beautiful state. Remember, updating doesn’t have to always mean brand new, it may mean restoring the old to work beautifully.

• Update your bathroom in phases: While we all would like to update an outdated bathroom within a weekend, the reality of your budget and time may not be realistic for this to happen. Consider saving money by remodeling or updating your bathroom in phases. For example, removing old ceramic tile, and replacing it on a bathroom wall may be a weekend project. Five Easy Ways To Makeover Your Kitchen

A kitchen is normally one of the most expensive rooms of your home to remodel. Appliances, tile, and granite all add up to an eye-raising cost - beyond most first-time homeowners' budget. But a kitchen needn't cost a fortune or be beyond the reach of your modest budget. If the basics of your kitchen are sound - the cabinets essentially usable though ugly, the appliances in working order, the layout in no immediate need of structural changes - you can make some simple changes and bring your kitchen into the modern era. Here's how:

• Paint. You have heard it before, but the cheapest way to change a space for the better is a gallon or two of paint. If you stick to neutral colors, you can add accessories, art, or curtains in a striking color as an accent. Neutral colors also sell if you decide to move.
• Cabinets. There are four ways to change your cabinets on a budget.
• Change the look. If your cabinet bases are in reasonably good shape, paint the cabinets and add new premade cabinet doors.
• The dark side. If you would rather not paint, consider staining the cabinets if the wood is in good shape. A dark stain in cherry or dark teak will update the look. But remember to strip and sand them before you stain. The time spent stripping and sanding will pay off in the professional look of the stained result.
• Open them up. After you paint the cabinets, take the doors off the top cabinets entirely to give them an open look.
• Add new hardware. Adding updated hardware can do wonders for the look of the kitchen. Brushed nickel or pewter knobs is a modern style can take decades off the style of your kitchen.
• Appliances. If your appliances are in good working order, you can update their look by painting them. If you are afraid to do it yourself, take them to an automobile paint shop and have them done. It is well worth the expense, which will be much less than new appliances.
• Countertops. New countertops are available at most home improvement stores in standard sizes. They are precut and ready to install. And they are very cost effective, especially if you chose a color or style that is on sale or clearance.
• Floor. The new styles of press and stick vinyl tiles look surprisingly high end. And they can be quickly installed. Try the new styles that look like slate - beautiful!

The U.S.Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently enacted new regulations affecting contractors performing renovation work in residential dwellings or child-occupied facilities built before 1978. This regulation is called “Lead: Renovation, Repair, and Painting Program” (RRP). Beginning in April 2010, any renovation work (including painting) which disturbs painted surfaces in residential dwellings or child-occupied facilities built before 1978, must be performed by persons trained in lead-safe work practices, with specific responsibilities for a new discipline of “Certified Renovator”.

Granite: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

So you want granite countertops…. Wait, do you want granite countertops or do you need granite countertops? There's nothing wrong with using granite for your new countertops if you've decided it's the best fit for you and your lifestyle. However, if you decided on granite after so-and-so told you it would increase the value of your home, you saw it featured on HGTV or the DIY Network, or noticed all your friends had it then it's time to do a little homework. When it comes to granite there's the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The Good
There are advantages to using granite as the material for your countertops. For instance:

•  It's heat resistant – Unlike other countertop materials such as wood, solid surface, and laminate granite won't scorch when hot pots and pans are placed on it. When you're cooking you can set items taken out of the oven or off of the stove on granite surfaces. However, keep in mind that nothing is 100% heat proof – extreme temperatures could cause granite to crack.
• It's scratch resistant – A popular selling point of granite is to say that you can cut directly on granite and your knife will dull before the granite scratches. You probably shouldn't do that because the best case scenario is a dull knife and the worse is a scratched or stained countertop. However, granite is scratch resistant, and on a daily basis there isn't much chance of you scratching your countertop. If it's something you're worried about, certain colors can help hide scratches that may occur.
• It provides a one-of-a-kind look – No two slabs of granite are identical. The differences between slabs are especially pronounced in granite that has movement (patterns). This means that even if you and all your friends decided to get the same color of granite your countertops would not look the same.
• It's durable – Granite is a tough, long lasting material. It's not something you're going to have to replace anytime soon.
• It's easy to clean – You can get cleaner made specifically for granite at most hardware stores or you can just use warm water and a little bit of mild soap. Check with your granite supplier to determine the best cleaning method for your countertops. You can also refer to this information from the Marble Institute of America: A Guide to the Care & Cleaning of Natural Stone.
•  It's water resistant – If you spill water on some materials and aren't able to clean it up in a timely manner you could be looking at a damaged or even ruined countertop. Granite is not one of those materials. Water spilt on granite may leave behind water spots, but those can be easily cleaned up with no lasting effects.

The Bad
There are disadvantages to using granite as the material for your countertops. For instance:

• It may stain – Acidic materials, oils, food coloring, permanent markers, and coffee are just a few of the items that may stain a granite countertop. Generally, the lighter the granite the more apparent staining is. Be conscious of your lifestyle; if you have young children a white granite may not be your best bet. In most cases, stains can be removed, but this could be difficult and costly. 
• A slab is hard to replace – Chances are that if you choose granite for your kitchen countertops you'll need more than one slab. Your granite supplier should be able to pick slabs that are similar in terms of color and movement so that you get a consistent look. This isn't too difficult because granite slabs come in a batch of about 4 that were pulled from the same spot at the same time. The slabs in a batch are similar (although not identical). The real problem is that if one slab in the countertop should crack somewhere down the road it will be difficult if not impossible to find a matching replacement. 
• It may have visible seams – A seam is where two pieces of granite are joined together. In some countertop materials like solid surface seams are not visible; unfortunately, granite seams can be noticeable. Ask your granite supplier if you'll have a seam(s), where the seam(s) will be, and what their seam size standards are. 
• It can crack – Granite can crack if stressed or installed improperly. 
• There may not be a warranty – Some countertop materials including solid surface and quartz generally come with a manufacturer warranty. Since granite isn't made by a company there is no manufacturer warranty, but your supplier may offer one. 
• It may require maintenance – Granite, unlike laminate, solid surface, quartz, and some other countertop materials, is not typically maintenance free. Granite may require regular (one to two times annually) sealing. Check with your granite supplier to determine if your granite should be sealed and how often.  

The Ugly (Truth)
 There are a lot of television shows that will have you believe granite countertops will increase the value of your home. Check with some local realtors to see if that’s fact or fiction. In addition, make sure you like granite. Otherwise, you may increase the value of your home only to find yourself stuck with a countertop you don’t enjoy and that doesn’t compliment your lifestyle.

The bottom line is that there are many materials available for countertops including quartz, solid surface, laminate, marble, wood, slate, soapstone, concrete, stainless steel, granite, and recycled materials. All of these materials have their pros and cons. You should pick your countertop material based on what works for you. Maybe that material is granite and maybe it’s not.
